A desire and passion to learn and teach has guided me through all of my successes and to my future aspirations. When I was a young girl, my mom, sister, and I attended the UU Fellowship of Clemson. In that small community, children and adults alike were encouraged to ask questions and expand their mind. We explored topics beyond our immediate concern. Focusing on the big picture allowed me to learn how to look beyond the now. In that uplifting community, I was exposed to the concept of composting. As an elementary student I had been fascinated by science, and this state of natural decomposition blew my mind. Finding out that scraps had a life and purpose beyond the trash can inspired me. Composting opened up my world to conservation, and I’ve carried that exposure with me through my life. While my elders taught me the basics of conservation, I still had so many questions. I wanted to know all of the hows, all of the whys. I wouldn’t begin to scratch the surface of those concepts until the end of high school, but for the time being I continued to recycle and reuse and reduce and compost… Anything to help.

My goal in my Girl Scout Gold Award Project is to spread the hunger for knowledge and to inform the youth of my community about composting and sustainable efforts. On this platform I will be tracking my experience working with students and the different lessons and activities we complete.
