Bring in different assortments of trash.
First have the kids separate them into piles of biodegradable and non-biodegradable.
From those piles they will separate compostable items from non-compostable items in the biodegradable pile.
From the non-biodegradable pile they will identify what can be recycled and/or reused.
Small groups will each have a pile and tell them if they got it right or wrong. They will try to get the most accurate piles after a few tries.
After the interactive portion of this activity, present the dos and don’ts of evaluating trash and different uses for reusable items.
